Pirates of the Caribbean is a movie placed in Port Royale in the Caribbean (obviously). Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) is the beautiful daughter of the governor of the small settlement who is desperately in love with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), a poor blacksmith's apprentice, who she helped rescue years before when the ship he was on was attacked by pirates. When the whimsical Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) comes to Port Royale, one thing leads to another, and the port is being attacked by pirates! But these are no ordinary pirates...they are cursed because of a secret that is trapped in Will's past, and they have been searching for him for eight years. Will and Elizabeth go with Jack Sparrow on a crazy adventure and end up in the typical happily-ever-after ending.
Johnny Depp is AMAZING. There are not enough words to describe the absolute perfection of his performance. He reminded me of a marvelous mix between Keith Richards and a swashbuckling scallywag that's addicted to rum. He was funny, charming (for a pirate), and has permanently earned the title of 'Jess's Inspiration'. Johnny Depp was robbed of an Oscar.
I've never liked Orlando Bloom -- I don't think he's hot, I think he's full of himself, and I firmly believe that he is severely overrated. He did alright in this movie, I must confess. He had emotion, but not quite enough to make me care about whether he lived or died. Orlando and Johnny and fabulous chemistry on-screen, and I was semi-convinced that Orlando and Keira Knightley were in love. Keira did a pretty good job, as well...I can't believe that she was only 17 years old when they were filming Pirates...
Geoffrey Rush was an incredible bad guy! By the end of the movie, you hate him, yet you feel sort of sad for him. He was evil to the core and added so much to the film.
I am definitely looking forward to the sequels that are coming out next year. A 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Trilogy...what could be better??!
